Perfect NAS for storing backups. I bought this to explore the idea of local backups but using it made me realize how useful cloud storage providers can be. There are a lot of advantages to this product – reliability is relatively high for storage, network performance is good and the firmware is opensource with a very large community for customized software.

Unfortunately, there are a few disadvantages. Namely there is no hardware transcoding because of low RAM and CPU numbers, which means you can’t play anything from the NAS itself. You need to download it locally and use it. This means no streaming or Plex media services. This itself relegates this product just as a long-term storage backup. Additionally, I hate to say it but WD’s application for viewing photos and videos from the NAS is horrible. Maybe we’ve been spoiled by the Photos app on iPhones or the Google Photos app on Android phones but the application has severe limitations and performance issues.

That said, it’s an excellent backup at home to store files that you can access from anywhere. If you install a tunnelling or VPN service like ZeroTier you’ll be able to access the NAS from anywhere in the world relatively safely without working out any ports on your router. But the poor hardware performance means that the only operations this NAS can do is moving files to and from local/network devices.

Best NAS to start your NAS Journey.
Pros > Not much of learning curve
    simple interface

    Cons>
Once it’s in hibernating mode no way to wake it up. You have to manually unplug and plug in power cable to wake it up

It’s no brainer that you should opt for diskless version. I ordered two 4 TB Segate HDD separately (this effectively means that now I have 8 TB ) and now my entire setup is even cheaper than 2×2 ( 4TB ) setup that some other seller are selling on Amazon.

    Pros:
    – Does what you expect
    – Very easy to install and setup
    – Simple UI interface to create users and grant access
    – you get coupon for 3 months for PLEX pass
    – Can be converted to Hybrid cloud ( connect to Dropbox or Amazon S3 bucket). I was able to connect to Amazon AWS S3 bucket in just 15 mins
    – If you have Smart TV it will automatically detect WD cloud and you can stream photos/videos

    Cons
-iOS app could have been better
-The auto backup of the photos in iOS only works when you keep the app open and uploading stops as soon as screen locks
    – Does not have best UI to display photos, videos
    – Cannot be connected to iCloud

    Points to remember
    – Format HDD after installing in the tray area.
    – I recommend using RAID 1 configuration
    – You should have a Gigabit router for faster WLAN upload and download.

If you are looking for a nas for your home use, this is the right choice for you. It gives you a great value for money. It supports a wide range of disk drives. Only downside is the mycloud os 5 dont have that much number of apps that are available on the platforms like truenas, if you are a developer this is also extremely easy to fix. Any apps can be ran via a special way of packaging.

    Pros:
    1. Great for personal storage
    2. Great for non-streaming media storage
    3. Good support for higher storage capacity hardware
    4. User friendly UI for the device, same goes for mobile app

    Cons:
    1. No physical start-up/shutdown button, you’ll need to select ‘Hibernate’ from the UI to stop it.
    2. To start it, you’ll need to switch off the power and switch it back on.
    3. The system is a bit slow over the network, that is, if you’re outside the local area network, might be a bit slow.
    4. Takes ~3 minutes to boot up after shutdown.

I like the product very much, had bad experience previously with this product as i got open box and defective ptoduct..

But this is bang got great one at less price, i got this at 12K+ which was great deal for me.. am using this with seagate 3.5 inch sata hdd not NAS and i on raid with single bay its runs like beast… great product..

Some of things to keep in mind before buying, this is non US model its Malaysia model, the write and read speed all depends on what internet speed you got, dnt expect 100MBS with 30MBS internet..it makes but noise while written or reading data.. you have get MyCloud OS 5 app to access file outside network and on mobile phones… i use it on ipad, laptop and mobiles…all works like smooth butter…

Overall i got the setup for less than 16k.. wd nas and seagate sata hdd.. it was great buy for me..

If you have loads of data and want to setup your own NAS yes definitely go for it..i use it for back up my all wildlife photos, if your are wildlife photographer and do alot of storing, yes its great buy.. its support all RAW photos and you can view RAW photos on MyCloud app without any other supporting software.. i suggest to buy diskstation and buy storage separately if yoh looking into budget kind of thing, if you ok with spending more money go for package with NAS hdd..

Overall it was happy buying for me..

As a NAS, this does a great job. The web interface is pretty decent and is simple to use. The NAS comes with two WD Red HDD’s.
As a plex media server it supports direct play. Can stream full 1080p videos without any issue.
The cloud access apps that come with it are not so awesome as GDrive but does the job.
I use this as a long term storage for my Udemy courses and other media files and use GDrive for files that I use frequently.
Recommend using it in RAID 1 configuration as then you are asssured that if even one disk fails, your data is secure.
The WD sync is not so good, so suggest using chronosync for Mac if you want to keep your files in sync with the NAS.
The transfer speeds are ok on a 5Ghz network. Can edit video files on wifi itself.
Sometimes the fans get a bit too loud and can stick out if you are in a silent environment.
Verdict. If you want a good long term storage solution with some cloud benefits strewn in, then this is the NAS for you.
