I have tried to get this to work on 6 different PC’s. 3 with Windows 10, 3 with Windows 11. In 2 cases I had to reinstall the Windows OS from scratch to get it to work – luckily, I had the ability to do that and had the time to reinstall all the applications again – 6 hours each time. Time I’ll never get back.

The software – where do I start?

First problem – you download it from the Seagate site and then it wants to perform an update – immediately. But, while I can access the Internet for email, web browsing, YouTube & Netflix – the Seagate One Touch Hub software cannot reach the Internet (and this is the latest version on their website)!!!

Second problem: even when I got it to work on 3 machines, driver updates, not detecting correctly. Seagate – good plug & play came in with Windows XP. Shouldn’t have problems with Windows 10 or 11!!

Had several weeks of dealing with support people. To be fair, they are supportive and try to help but having to reinstall Windows because the software is crap, leaves a lot to be desired. Overall a very bad experience.

I only need this to act as a backup drive. Thank goodness it doesn’t have to anything complicated, like be a media server drive. I haven’t had problems like this in over 10 years.

    DO NOT BUY.

I bought the 16TB unit with front USB hub to store photographs and some miscellaneous files. My unit is connected to a dual-boot (Windows 10 & Ubuntu) laptop workstation through a USB hub.

After I connected the USB cable, I plugged in the drive’s power cord and Seagate One Touch Hub fired right up. I moved 50,000 files, totaling about 500GB to the drive to confirm that everything was working, and then fired up Lightroom and had it ‘add’ a year’s worth of pictures to it’s catalog. Everything worked fine. I then booted up Ubuntu to confirm that Ubuntu could see and access the disk, and it did so without any issues.

While I did not benchmark the unit, it’s speed seemed typical of other hard drives. That is, while much slower than a SSD, is plenty fast enough for photo storage.

The unit has only a very small disk activity LED on the front of the unit. There are no other lights on the unit. When you first add the unit to a Windows system, the drive will appear in the ‘Desktop’ view of the File Manager. Normally File Manager defaults to showing you the ‘Quick Access’ – Frequent Folders and Recent Files view.

The unit isn’t silent – no hard disk drive is – and it does make sounds when it’s spinning the disk platters up to speed after ‘sleeping’ and when the disk is moving the disk heads to read or write a file. The rest of the time the unit is essentially silent. It’s safe to say that this disk is nosier than any disk I’ve had before (it’s also a LOT bigger than any disk I’ve had before), but the sounds this unit makes are no louder than everyday background office noises. Personally, I don’t find them objectionable.

I am pleased with the 16TB Seagate One Touch Hub I purchased. The unit is performing like I expected it to, and I expect it will serve me well for a number of years.

When booting up it’s incredibly loud! It also takes a long time to boot… about 20 seconds. It has 14.5GB usable space from 16GB advertised which is normal for external drives. Get anywhere from 50MB/s – 150MB/s when copying files to and from the drive. The extra USB port on the front is a nice touch. Overall it’s a decent external drive even with the racket it makes!

I bought the 16Tb version. Firstly I have used a variety of brands over the last few years but wanted a large Tb device and saw the price of this model. It formatted without problems to NTFS for my PC and the forward placed USB is a bonus.

Now here is the problem…. It can only be shut down by “Disconnect USB device” then when you want to use it again it needs to be plugged in once your PC is up and running fully… Come on Seagate, it’s not 1990.

Froze my startup procedure every time until I fathomed that out, it feels old and the provided backup software is also like the company thinks “Well this worked 20 years ago so we’ll keep it”

But I will keep it as the price is right for the small drama of start up and shut down. Read and write speed is good, drive makes a few whirring and clunk sounds but nothing that would upset a live broadcast (for example).

My feeling is, I will use it until I get annoyed with it.
