The build I paired this CPU with is as follows:

    CPU: 7800x3d
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Master X670E
    RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series (AMD Expo) 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin SDRAM DDR5 6000 CL30-38-38-96 1.35V Dual Channel Desktop Memory F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR (Matte Black)
Cooler: Artic Liquid Freezer II 360
Case: Cooler Master Cosmos II (From previous builds, I never change cases)
Storage: Primary/boot is a Crucial T700 PCIE 5.0, with 3 other nvme drives and about 100tb of platter storage.
    PSU: EVGA 1600w G+
GPU: Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 4090

This is my first AMD CPU ever, in fact I upgraded from an Intel-based build, an i9-12900k. Normally I do not upgrade so soon, I usually upgrade platforms in 4 year increments but the performance gains with 3dvCache in my games were too much to pass up.

This CPU excels in strategy games such as games by Paradox Interactive (Europa Universalis IV, Stellaris, etc) and is no slouch with other genres either, FPS, RPG, you-name-it. I was getting terrible lag late game in Stellaris in particular on my 12900k and this 7800x3d made a hugely noticeable difference, with 10,000 pops and a 1,000 star galaxy and hundreds of millions of fleetpower with many mods.

Rimworld is another example where this CPU shines. I was trying to conquer the world in one of my Rimworld playthroughs and the late game lag on the 12900k was too much to bear, it killed the run – was unplayable. This CPU turned the stutter into smoothness even with close to 50 colonists, many mods, many robots, and so on.

Overall a very good CPU I expect to last me at least 4 years playing AAA and strategy games.

I have gotten this paired with a 6600xt from my old prebuilt and 32gb 6000mhz ram, and it runs really well on games like fortnite i get around 400-700fps or a stable 360 capped game with occasional stutters and frame drops but that’s fortnite and the 6600xt Amd cards aren’t very good on it but the cpu was being almost fully utilized and the gpu was about 20%, I’ve tried mw2 it gets like 130fps but I don’t play it much and don’t have very many other games I tested gta 5 with mods and graphics mods and was getting like 188fps with just 1080p but I don’t know how to uncap fps on gta for some reason it’s specifically 188, maybe it was my gpu idk, unfortunately still feels like my 5600g on non game applications, not great, but still plan on upgrading my gpu to something like a 4070 or 4080. And I still hear the odd ticking or buzzing / malfunctioning sounding noise from the cpu running games I’m not sure if that’s normal it’s the same with my 5600g so I guess it’s a Amd thing.

But it’s pretty good for games, especially if your not able to upgrade your gpu yet and the cpu will pretty much do all the work your gpu can’t with fps.

I’ve always been an Intel guy, but there is no denying right now that AMD are making the fastest gaming chips. If you care about gaming performance, you cannot currently do better than this chip.

The main competitive game I play is Warzone 2. I have the water-cooled version of the 3080ti (it has its own pump and exhaust fans) and I had previously been running an i9 10900k. It was cooled by a Noctua NHD15 on Windows 11 at 1440p. No matter how low I put the graphics settings, I could only ever average about 120-130 FPS with very frequent drops to 100-110FPS and some occasional drops to the high 80’s and low 90’s. This held true even if I used DLSS Performance mode. Zero difference in average FPS. It felt absolutely terrible to try to push an enemy team at close range with mortar strikes and smoke grenades going off and have a huge FPS drop. Felt equally as bad to stare off at a big cityscape horizon while trying to take long range precision shots and suddenly have to fight system performance.

Long story short, I paired the 7800X3D with a Gigabyte x670 Aorus Elite AX motherboard and 32GB of DDR5 6000mhz Corsair Vengeance RAM, and my average FPS has exploded up to 190-210. Jumping out the plane I’m almost always above 200FPS, which is just absurd to me, and I’m frequently in the 210-220 range just running around Al Mazrah. My 1% lows are in the 165-180 range, which I can barely feel.

I’ve tested this CPU as well in BF2042 and The Last of Us Part 1. Basically, I’m never CPU-bound anymore. When I lower my graphics settings, I get a lot of FPS back. That never used to happen. On my 3080ti + i9 10900k setup, it DIDN’T matter how low I dropped the graphics. There was minimal FPS difference between high and medium and even less difference between medium and low, because I was CPU bound.

Now that I’m no longer CPU bound, I can drop graphics settings and get a LOT of FPS back or settle on a nice mix of medium & high for a story-driven game like TLOU and still get fantastic FPS with almost zero noticeable drops.

Back when I was getting frustrated with WZ2 FPS drops, I had seriously considered that I might need to upgrade my GPU to a 4090 and I’ve very glad I held off on that decision. 4090 MSRP right now is $1600 without tax and I can’t find any on Amazon below $1700. With tax you’re looking at a pretty penny, and my FPS issues still would have continued unabated because I’d have been addressing the wrong problem.

This CPU + mobo + RAM altogether came out to $972.98 with tax. So I basically saved at least $700 and probably more while massively increasing the performance scaling of the games I play and unlocking the full potential of my watercooled 3080ti.

I did have to order an AM5 mounting bracket for my Noctua cooler, but that was only like 7 bucks and it was easy to install.

When it comes to CPU’s, I can officially be counted as a member of team red. I’ve been building PC’s since 2006 and every single one of them up until now has had an Intel chip in it, but there is no denying the raw performance of 3D v cache in certain games, particularly in the battle royale genre.

    Pros:
    – Gaming performance is unmatched.
    – AMD finally grows up with the AM5 socket and ditches CPU pins. This was probably the easiest computer build I’ve ever done, in part due to this.
    – Way more power efficient under load than the competition.

    Cons:
    – It’s cheaper than the top tier, but $449 still isn’t cheap, especially for only 8 cores.
    – Performance for everything besides gaming is, at best, middle of the road. This is a gaming CPU through and through; if you care about performance for anything else, don’t get it.

This CPU choice was a bit of a departure for me. I usually just get the most expensive consumer processor available. But, with GPU prices and motherboard prices the way they are (this was the first time I’ve paid more for the motherboard than the CPU), plus the off-the-charts power and thermals for some of the more expensive options, I had to settle for some compromises. But, one thing I didn’t want to compromise on was gaming performance, and with the 7800X3D, I don’t have to!

With DDR5 getting cheaper by the day, the 7800X3D is an excellent choice for anyone building a PC not entirely focused on productivity. It is the absolute best in Gaming, beating out the 13900k while consuming one third the power and being waaay easier to cool.
Pair this with any half decent air cooler, a decent B650 board, 32G of 6000 DDR5 CL30 ram and you have an excellent machine on your hands without breaking the bank.

Memory tuning the first couple boots takes extraordinarily long, but just be patient. This particular CPU tuned very well in PBO so I guess I was lucky with the silicon lottery aswell. Two thumbs up.
